Vibration Analyses Report on a FPSO Crane

Project Description

The computational mechanic group, at SRK Argentina, undertook a vibration analysis focused on optimizing the performance during slewing operations of the portside crane of a FPSO (Floating Production Storage and Offloading) vessel located in the North Sea.

Taylor Devices, Inc. # 20387 dampers were implemented, achieving a remarkable reduction in displacements and accelerations in the crane. We relied on ADINA software to accurately replicate the beneficial non-linear behavior of the dampers.

Our sensitivity analyses, investigating damper configurations, crane positions, and properties, provided valuable insights to enhance the crane's performance. Led by Juan Mussat, the vibration assessment was a crucial step in quantifying the impact of the dampers, conducted in strict accordance with Health and Safety Executive Offshore Technology Report 2001/068 and BS ISO 2631-1 standards.

The project profile showcases the FPSO crane, including the pedestal and hull mesh, both with and without dampers. Our modeling yielded crane displacement, damper stroke, and force over time, which we then analyzed for performance optimization during slewing operations, particularly noting the substantial improvements when Taylor Devices were employed.
 
In a future stage, we plan to verify the effect of the damper force on the adjacent module according to the AISC Manual of Steel Construction: Allowable Stress Design (note that a similar study was conducted in the past for a related issue).
